Etymology

From Middle English 'blade', from Old English 'blæd' (a leaf, a blade). Historically related to the German 'Blatt' (leaf). The sense shifted from a leaf of a plant to anything thin and flat, eventually specializing into the cutting part of a tool due to the similarity in shape.
