Do not use 'but' in the same sentence as 'although'. Use one or the other.

  • Although the rain, we went out.

Although it was raining, we went out.

'Although' must be followed by a subject and verb (a clause), not just a noun. Use 'despite' for nouns.

Don't confuse with

  • despite

without being affected by; in spite of

“We went out despite the rain.”

'Despite' is a preposition followed by a noun/gerund; 'although' is a conjunction followed by a clause.

  • however

used to introduce a statement that contrasts with something that has just been said

  • Từ 'mặc dầu' đôi khi được dùng thay cho 'mặc dù' trong văn chương hoặc ngữ cảnh trang trọng hơn tại Việt Nam, tương tự như sự khác biệt nhẹ giữa 'although' và 'though'.
