Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I will to go.

    I will go.

Do not use 'to' after the modal verb 'will'.

  • He wills go tomorrow.

    He will go tomorrow.

The modal verb 'will' does not change form for the third person singular.

  • I will can do it.

I will be able to do it.

You cannot use two modal verbs together. Use 'be able to' instead of 'can' after 'will'.

  • She won't to help me.

    She won't help me.

Even in the negative form 'won't', do not use 'to' before the following verb.

  • He did it against my willing.

He did it against my will.

In the phrase 'against someone's will', the noun form 'will' must be used, not the participle 'willing'.

Don't confuse with

  • shall

Often used like 'will' for the future but more formal.

    “I shall be there.”

Use 'will' for most everyday situations; 'shall' is mostly British and very formal.

  • going to

Used for plans made before the moment of speaking.

“I am going to visit my grandma.”

Use 'will' for spontaneous decisions and 'going to' for pre-made plans.

  • Thành ngữ 'Where there's a will, there's a way' cực kỳ phổ biến và tương đồng 100% với tư tưởng 'Có chí thì nên' trong văn hóa Việt Nam.
  • Từ 'will' với nghĩa di chúc (testament) là một khái niệm pháp lý quan trọng, thường được liên hệ với đạo hiếu và sự sắp xếp gia đình trong văn hóa Á Đông.

Etymology

From Old English 'willan' (verb) and 'willa' (noun), of Germanic origin. It is related to Dutch 'willen' and German 'wollen'. The legal sense of 'will' (testament) developed from the sense of 'desire' or 'intent' regarding one's property.
