Etymology

Originates from the late 15th century (denoting a flue or a funnel-shaped net): from Old French 'tonel' (cask), a diminutive of 'tonne'. The sense of an underground passage developed in the 18th century during the canal-building era, possibly because the shape resembled the inside of a barrel.
