Common mistakes

  • He didn't study, thus he failed.

He didn't study; thus, he failed. (OR: ...and thus he failed.)

'Thus' is a conjunctive adverb, not a coordinating conjunction. It cannot join two independent clauses with only a comma (comma splice).

  • The results were thusly.

    The results were thus.

'Thusly' is non-standard; 'thus' is the correct form.

  • I have not seen him thus far.

I have not seen him thus far.

Correct, but ensure 'thus far' is used in formal contexts; 'so far' is better for casual speech.

  • Thus he entered the room.

    Thus, he entered the room.

In academic writing, 'thus' at the start of a sentence is usually followed by a comma when it means 'consequently'.

  • We used a machine to thus speed up the process.

We used a machine, thus speeding up the process.

Using 'thus' with a present participle (-ing) is a common and correct academic pattern to show result.

Don't confuse with

  • thusly

Often used incorrectly as a more 'proper' version of thus.

    “He spoke thusly.”

'Thus' is already an adverb; 'thusly' is often considered redundant or non-standard.

  • this

Used to identify a specific person or thing.

    “This is my house.”

Thus is an adverb (how/result), this is a determiner/pronoun (what).
