Etymology

From Middle English remors, from Old French remors, from Medieval Latin remorsus, from Latin remordēre ('to bite back, torment'), from re- ('again, back') + mordēre ('to bite'). The literal sense of 'biting back' evolved metaphorically into the 'gnawing' feeling of guilt.
