Etymology

Originates from the 14th century. The sense of 'student' comes from Old French 'pupille' and Latin 'pupillus' (orphan, minor), a diminutive of 'pupus' (boy). The sense of 'eye' comes from Latin 'pupilla' (little girl), so called because of the tiny reflection of oneself seen in the eye. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology)
