Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I should of gone.

    I should have gone.

Learners often confuse the weak pronunciation of 'have' (/əv/) with 'of'.

  • It depends of the weather.

    It depends on the weather.

The verb 'depend' always takes the preposition 'on', not 'of'.

  • A cup tea.

    A cup of tea.

Nouns of measurement or containers require 'of' before the substance.

  • I'm thinking of to go.

    I'm thinking of going.

After the preposition 'of', use the -ing form of a verb, not the infinitive.

  • The most of people.

Most people or Most of the people.

Do not use 'the most of' when you mean 'the majority of'.

Don't confuse with

  • off

Away from a place or at a distance.

    “He took his hat off.”

'Of' has one 'f' and usually connects two nouns; 'Off' has two 'fs' and often acts as an adverb or preposition of motion.

  • have

To possess or to perform an action.

    “I should have gone.”

Never use 'of' after 'should', 'could', or 'would' in formal writing, even though it sounds like 'of'.

  • Người Việt thường nhầm lẫn 'of' với 'off' hoặc sử dụng sai giới từ sau các động từ như 'depend' (phải dùng 'on' thay vì 'of').
  • Trong các danh hiệu hoặc tên tổ chức, 'of' đóng vai trò quan trọng để xác định trực thuộc.

Etymology
