Etymology

From Middle English 'noteschel', equivalent to nut + shell. The figurative phrase 'in a nutshell' dates back to Pliny the Elder's description of a copy of Homer's Iliad small enough to fit inside a walnut shell, later evolving to mean 'in a few words' by the 1500s.
