Etymology
Originating in the late 14th century from the Anglo-Norman French word 'enditement', from 'enditer' meaning to accuse or indict. This stems from the Latin 'indictare', meaning to proclaim or declare, which is the frequentative of 'indicere'. The silent 'c' was added in the 16th century to reflect the Latin root 'indict-'.
