Meanings

4 meanings

  1. 1Very tired, either physically or mentally.adjectivegeneral

Rất mệt mỏi, về mặt thể chất hoặc tinh thần (kiệt sức, mệt lử).

    “I'm exhausted!”

    “Tôi kiệt sức rồi!”

    • I was exhausted from the day's work.
    • She felt emotionally exhausted.
    • She found herself exhausted most of the time.
    • She was exhausted with fear and the constant tension.
    • The row had left him physically exhausted.

Lưu ý 'exhausted' là tính từ chỉ mức độ cực đại (extreme adjective), do đó người học Việt Nam không nên dùng với 'very' (very exhausted) mà phải dùng với 'absolutely' hoặc 'completely'.

  2. 2Completely used or finished; depleted of resources.adjectivegeneral

Bị sử dụng hết hoặc cạn kiệt; không còn tài nguyên (cạn kiệt, bạc màu).

“You cannot grow crops on exhausted land.”

    • The country's exhausted economy desperately needed foreign investment.
    • They had to abandon the exhausted coal mine.

  3. 3Emptied of contents, especially of air; that has been made into a vacuum.adjectivetechnical

“The exhausted tube was carefully sealed in the laboratory.”

  4. 4Simple past and past participle of exhaust; to have made someone very tired or to have used something completely.verbgeneral

“We exhausted all our options before making a final decision.”

    • The long journey completely exhausted the children.
    • They have exhausted the available funds for the project.

Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I am very exhausted.

    I am absolutely exhausted.

Because 'exhausted' is an extreme adjective, it should be modified by 'absolutely' or 'completely', not 'very'.

  • The work was exhausted.

    The work was exhausting.

Use the -ing form (exhausting) to describe the thing that causes the feeling, and the -ed form (exhausted) to describe the person experiencing it.

  • I am exhausted of studying.

    I am exhausted from studying.

The correct preposition to use after exhausted when stating the cause is 'from' or 'by', not 'of'.

  • He felt exhaust.

    He felt exhausted.

Use the adjective form 'exhausted' after linking verbs like 'feel' or 'look'.

  • We have exhausted all our option.

We have exhausted all our options.

When meaning 'used up completely', 'options' or 'resources' is typically plural.

Don't confuse with

  • exhausting

    making you feel very tired

    “It was an exhausting journey.”

Use 'exhausted' for how you feel, and 'exhausting' for what causes the feeling.

  • tired

in need of sleep or rest

    “I am tired after work.”

'Exhausted' is much stronger than 'tired' and means completely without energy.

Etymology

From Latin 'exhaustus', past participle of 'exhaurire' (to draw out, empty, exhaust), from 'ex-' (out) + 'haurire' (to draw water). First recorded in English in the early 16th century.
