From Old English 'cū', of Germanic origin; related to Dutch 'koe' and German 'Kuh', from an Indo-European root (gʷōus) shared by Latin 'bos' and Greek 'bous'. The verb sense (to intimidate) probably comes from the Old Norse 'kuga' meaning to oppress. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
