Use 'could' to be more polite or to talk about the past.

Etymology

Etymology: Middle English 'coude', from Old English 'cūthe', which was the past tense of 'cunnan' (to know, be able to). The letter 'l' was added in the 15th and 16th centuries to make the spelling match 'should' and 'would', where the 'l' was originally part of the root (Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
