Origin: Late Middle English (in the sense 'region of the earth'): from Old French climat, via Latin from Greek klima 'inclination, slope', from klinein 'to lean'. The term originally referred to the slope of the earth's surface from the equator to the poles, which was thought to determine the weather. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
