Etymology

From Old English 'steorfan' (to die), of Germanic origin; related to Dutch 'sterven' and German 'sterben'. Originally meaning 'to die' in general, the sense narrowed to 'die from hunger' or 'die from cold' in Middle English. The modern restriction to hunger became standard in the 16th century (cite: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
