Late 19th century: from the past participle of the verb 'report' (from Old French 'reporter', from Latin 'reportare' meaning 'bring back') + the adverbial suffix '-ly'. It developed as a way for journalists and writers to attribute information to sources without claiming personal knowledge of the truth.
