  2. 2In a way that was not planned but that is connected with something else, or is not as important as the main subject.general

Theo một cách không được lên kế hoạch trước nhưng có liên quan đến một việc khác, hoặc không quan trọng bằng chủ đề chính (tình cờ, ngẫu nhiên, phụ).

Common mistakes

    He broke the vase accidentally.

'Incidentally' means 'by the way' or 'as a secondary effect', not 'by mistake'.

Incidentally, I saw your brother yesterday.

The word is spelled with an 'a' before the 'lly' (incidentally).

I accidentally/coincidentally met him at the store.

'Incidentally' is rarely used to describe chance meetings; 'coincidentally' or 'by chance' is more natural.

Incidentally, did you finish the report?

'Incidentally' already means 'by the way', so adding 'by' is redundant.

Use 'incidentally' for adding extra information in conversation, and 'accidentally' for mistakes.

  • coincidentally

Use 'coincidentally' when two related things happen by chance at the same time.

Etymology

From late 16th century: from the adjective 'incidental' + '-ly'. The adjective derives from medieval Latin 'incidental', from 'incident-' meaning 'falling upon or happening to'.
