Etymology

From South African Dutch (Afrikaans) 'trekken' meaning 'to pull, travel', originally from Middle Dutch 'trecken'. It entered English in the 19th century, initially referring to the migration of Boers, and later broadened to mean any long, difficult journey on foot.
