Etymology
From Old French 'mort' (dead) and 'gage' (pledge). Late Middle English (originally as a legal term). It was called a 'dead pledge' because the deal 'died' either when the debt was paid or when the property was lost due to non-payment (citing Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
