Etymology

Formed from the Old English 'fyrst' (preceding all others) and 'flor' (ground, pavement). The divergence in meaning between British and American English stems from historical architectural naming conventions; Europeans named the main living area above the ground the 'first floor' (piano nobile), while Americans counted the ground level as the first.
