Etymology
1944: Coined by Polish-Jewish lawyer Raphael Lemkin in his book 'Axis Rule in Occupied Europe'. It is derived from the Greek 'genos' (race, tribe, or nation) and the Latin '-cidium' (killing). Lemkin developed the term to describe the systematic Nazi policies of destruction during the Holocaust.
